Nationwide Network for Educational Satellite Terrestrial Stations (NNESTS)

About NNESTS

The NNESTS project aims to stimulate interest in satellite technology and promote STEM education by developing learning materials and providing capacity building activities to teachers. For the project’s initial run, its learning materials and classroom activities will be designed with reference to DepEd’s Science Curriculum, particularly for Grade 10 that focus on the application of Electromagnetic (EM) spectrum and radio waves in satellite communication. In addition, amateur radio kits will be provided in selected Department of Education (DepEd) schools. These kits will be used for experiential learning of the materials developed, class demonstration, and could also be used as a communication device in times of disaster.

Amateur radio in classroom activities promotes (i) interdisciplinary education as it integrates math, science, engineering, and technology, as well as other disciplines such as geography, language and communications, and social studies; (ii) helps students understand complex technical concepts like electromagnetic spectrum and supports STEM instruction by providing classroom demonstrations and practical applications; (iii) motivates/inspires students to take up STEM careers such as computer science, electronics and electrical engineering, telecommunications, etc.; and (iv) demonstrates day-to-day applications of space technology such as wireless communications and emergency response.
